Typically spirits are lower in calories than many other alcoholic drinks with the lowest calorie spirits being brandy, gin, rum, whisky and vodka. Team these spirits with a low calorie mixer drink or diet drink and you can ensure you stay within your diet calorie limits whilst still enjoying a few drinks.
Higher calorie drinks are cocktails made with sugary mixer drinks. Irish cream liqueurs can be very high in calories due to the added full cream. Ale and cider are also generally higher calorie drinks and full of carbohydrates. Use the calorie counter for alcoholic drinks to assess which are your best choices to keep your calorific intake low whilst on a diet
Make sure you drink responsibly and stay within the recommended alcohol levels. The government advises you should not regularly drink more than the daily unit guidelines of 3-4 units of alcohol for men (equivalent to a pint and a half of 4% beer) and 2-3 units of alcohol for women (equivalent to a 175 ml glass of wine). ‘Regularly’ means drinking every day or most days of the week.
