Pescetarian Diet

pescetarian diet
A pescetarian diet is defined as a diet to mean one where you eat fish but no meat. It is the practice of a diet that includes seafood but not the flesh of other animals.

For some, becoming eventually either a vegan or vegetarian is the ultimate goal and a pescetarian diet is sometimes seen as an interim transitional diet.

Pescetarian Diet Foods

Fish, seafood, fruit, vegetables, grains, nuts, grains, beans, eggs and dairy.

How much weight can I lose on the pescetarian diet?

A pescetarian diet is usually undertaken for health or aesthetic reasons rather than as a focus on weight loss. One of the most common reasons is that of health, based on findings that red meat is detrimental to health. Eating certain types of fish is more beneficial and some fish are a convenient source of omega 3 fatty acids and have many health benefits in one food variety.  Studies comparing vegetarian and non-vegetarian mortality rates found that in comparison with regular meat eaters, mortality from heart disease was about a third lower in pescetarians and vegetarians, about a quarter lower in vegans and 20% lower in occasional meat eaters.

However, there are concerns about consuming large quantities of some fish such as tuna due to their high levels of toxins such as mercury. To counteract this it would be possible though to pick fish containing little or no mercury and consume limited amounts of mercury containing fish.

How does the pescetarian diet work?

Pescetarianism is similar to many traditional natural diets emphasizing fish with fruits, vegetables and grains. Perhaps the most well known is the Mediterranean diet. Pescetarians are sometimes wrongly described as vegetarian and often people unfamiliar with vegetarianism understand the pescetarian diet to be vegetarian. In common with vegetarians, pescetarians will eat eggs and dairy products, in addition to fruits, vegetables and grains. However the Vegetarian Society, does not consider pescetarianism to be a vegetarian diet.
