Food combining (also known as trophology) advocates specific food combinations as central to good health and weight loss (eg not mixing carbs and proteins in the same meal).

The Hay diet is one type of food combining diet.

The idea of a food combining diet is to maximize the nutritional benefit of food through improved digestion resulting in weight loss.

Food combining Diet Menu

Any foods can be eaten but restricted to eating foods in certain orders or separately from each other. The food combining diet menu is a strict one and needs patience to understand and discipline to apply.

See below for details of ideas of foods to eat on a food combining diet.

How much weight can you lose on the diet plan?

Some dieters claim weight loss on the food combining plan of 4 to 7lb per week or 30lb over 30 days. This equates to weight loss on average according to some dieters of 1lb per day!

Such rapid weight loss is impressive but given average sustainable weight loss of 2 lbs a week is recommended such a fast rate of losing weight can seem dubious.

How does food combining work?

Digestive enzymes are secreted in specific amounts and at specific times. Different food types require different digestive secretions. The food combining rules of which are summarised below:

Food combining diet rules

1.
Carbohydrate foods and acid foods should not be eaten at the same meal. Do not eat bread, rice or potatoes with lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruits, pineapples, tomatoes or other sour fruits. Tomatoes should also never be combined with starchy food but may be eaten with leafy vegetables and fat foods.

2. Do not eat concentrated protein and concentrated carbohydrate at the same meal. This means do not eat nuts, meat, eggs, cheese or protein foods with bread, cereals, potatoes, sweet fruits.

3. Do not eat two concentrated proteins at the same meal. Avoid nuts and meat, or eggs and meat, cheese and nuts, cheese and eggs, meat and milk, or eggs and milk or nuts at milk at the same meal. Milk is best taken alone.

4. Do not eat fats with proteins. So do not use cream, butter, oil, etc with meat, eggs, cheese, nuts, etc.

5. Do not eat acid fruits with proteins. Oranges, tomatoes, lemons, pineapples, etc., should not be eaten with meat, eggs, cheese or nuts.

6. Do not eat starch and sugars together. No jellies, jams, fruit, butter, sugar, honey, syrups, molasses, etc., on bread or at the same meal with cereals, potatoes, etc.

7. Eat only one concentrated starch food at a meal.

8. Do not have melon with any other foods. Watermelon, muskmelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe and other melons should be eaten alone due to the ease and speed in which melons decompose.

9. Milk is best taken alone. The use of acid fruits with milk does not cause any trouble and apparently does not conflict with its digestion.
