Why are grapes good for you?

Grapes are popular as snack fruits due to their flavor, crisp texture, refreshing taste and attractive color. The good news is that grapes are packed with essential vitamins and nutrients.

Grapes are High in Vitamins

There are black, purple, green, white and  pink coloured grapes. Irrespective of the colour, grapes are full of essential vitamins Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B and Folate. A 4 ounce serving of grapes contains approximately 25% of the recommended daily intake of Vitamin C.

Grapes are Rich in Minerals

The most significant minerals present in grapes are manganese and potassium. These minerals are essential for blood health, reduce risks of hypertension, help with depression and improve immunity.

Other minerals in grapes are copper, zinc, calcium, phosphorous, iron and selenium.

Grapes are Good for Your Heart

The top benefit of eating grapes is production of anti-oxidants in your body. Grapes are rich in antioxidants which bind with the “free radicals” present in  your body to reduce the risk of plague formation on arteries to promote a healthy heart.

Grapes help with the formation of nitric oxide in the body as well. This substance helps improve heart health by reducing blood clots, platelet aggregation and oxidation of LDL (which causes plagues on arteries).

Resveratrol which is a compound found in grape skins and seeds, keeps the heart muscles flexible and in top health. The reason red wines are thought to be good for the heart is due to their high concentration of resveratrol. The French, despite eating a high fat diet have low heart disease rates as a nation which is largely due to their high consumption of red wine and grapes.

Grapes also contain a compound called saponin which reduces the absorption of cholesterol thus reducing the risk of heart disease.

Grapes Help Prevent Cancer

The presence of antioxidant compounds in grapes helps bind free radicals in the body. These free radicals or “oxidants” are responsible for cancer formation in the body. Drinking red wine can reduce the risk of lung cancer by around 13%, apparently owing to high concentration of antioxidants. The same benefits can be obtained from eating purple or red grapes on daily basis, rather than drinking red wine.

Alternatively, drinking grape juice made from purple grapes helps reduce the risk of colon and breast cancer.

Grapes Aid the Digestive System

Grapes have several anti-microbial properties and not harmful to the beneficial bacteria in the stomach. Grape extracts show the growth of 14 different types of harmful bacteria commonly found in human intestine and stomach.

So if you want to lose weight and keep healthy grapes are a sensible choice for your diet. The calories in grapes are both low and good quality giving many health benefits. By consuming grapes as fresh fruit, as red wine, grape juice or even as a dried fruit in the form of raisins you can take advantage of the weight loss and health properties provided by grapes.
